Frequently Asked Questions - Streaming

How big of a stream do I really need?
This will depend on the quality you want to give your listeners.  The higher the bitrate (or quality, measured in kbps), the better the "reception" is for your listeners.

For a "talk radio" type station, what bitrate do I need?
24 kbps can provide a pretty good talk radio broadcast to your users, and is our lowest cost stream.

I want to broadcast music, with good quality.
Depending on your budget, 96 kbps, 112 kbps, or 128 kbps can provide a very nice experience for your users, while still being reasonably priced.

I want to broadcast music, with superb quality.
Our highest quality audio streaming option of 192 kbps will maintain the highest quality stream for your listeners.

What connection is needed for me to broadcast?.
This will depend on the bitrate (quality) you choose for your station.  Generally, your connection will need to be able to upload at twice the bitrate that you are broadcasting, to ensure quality for your listeners.

I have DSL, what quality can I broadcast?
With a typical 1.5 Mbps DSL line, with an upload speed of 256 kbps  (DSL download and upload speeds differ), a 128 kbps broadcast should be fine.  192 kbps is possible, but will crowd the margin of safety.
I have 56k dial-up, what can I broadcast?
You can broadcast at 24 Kbps.  This is good for "talk radio" type stations, and can also do music surprisingly well, but it is well worth upgrading to DSL and your listeners will appreciate the extra quality.
